Absolutely beautiful pictures. Love the one of Dee peeking through the tree leaves and holding Steve’s hand. Love them all.

Links and Things #2

Hello everyone who reads my blog! I am so glad you are here! That sounds cheesy doesn’t it? But its true! Okay enough with the exclamation points I am just happy to be blogging more and I hope you all are enjoying it as well =) On that note I think its time for another installment of Links and Things! These are the things that I have found interesting or fun or that I just plain enjoyed this week. Enjoy!

1) Seth Godin’s blog . Seth Godin is an entrepreneur, public speaker, and author. He writes crazy awesome things about marketing and success and I enjoy his writings thoroughly. You should definitely check out his blog or read one of his books. I am thinking of buying this one to start with: Linchpin

2) Something I have realized this week is that writing things down really helps you remember them. So, no more thinking I will remember it later when I need to! ;) I’m all about lists and being organized!

3) Gardening! This is my new love. Who knew digging in the dirt and watering plants could be so soul-soothing. I strongly recommend taking this up. It’s good for you too! Here’s an idea to get you started:
A seed starter kit. Or just go by your local garden center and buy seed packets. Its easier than you think!

4) For those of you photographers out there I am guessing you have heard of Jasmine Star, but have you heard of her sister Bianca Juarez? I absolutely love her blog.
She blogs almost daily about all kinds of things including the bible and topics relating to the church, etc. Good stuff.

5) yogatoday.com This is probably the best online yoga website I have come across. It used to be completely free but now they offer one free hour long episode per week which is still pretty darn awesome. If you haven’t tried yoga yet, you definitely should. Such a great workout and it leaves you feeling great afterwards.

6) Hanging out with the girls. Every girl knows how vital girl time is. Yesterday I hung out with my best friend, Shasta, and Brittney, a friend I hadn’t seen in a very long time. It was so much fun just having girl talk. Your hubby was a great sport Brittney ;)

7) Cornerstone Church of Simi Valley. Although I have never attended a service in person I am a huge fan of pastor Francis Chan’s book Crazy Love and I love any sermon that comes out of his church whether its by him or the other pastors there. You can listen to messages here.

8) This Mad Tv video. Its old and maybe you have seen it before. Buts its so hilarious I can watch it again and again and again. Haha!

9) Rawvolution restaurant in Santa Monica. Seriously one of the best meals of my life and it also happens to be the healthiest food I’ve eaten in my life. You HAVE to go there. Helen Hunt was sitting in the corner opposite us so It must be good right? ;) Here’s me and Tim eating there. Notice me happy as a clam.

Anyhoo, I hope you all enjoy these links and things posts. Please feel free to post your favorite links and things in the comment box. I would love to hear them! They just might end up in a future links and things post ;)

Ahhhh, Jessica I love your pics!! You are sooo talented, I love you.

My First Ever Vegetable Garden!

Alright folks, I planted a garden! I have been wanting to do this for a long time but it never seemed to happen until I finally decided to just do it. I love me some big salads and some delicious fruit and greens smoothies so I decided to plant different lettuces and some carrots to start. I didn’t want to go overboard and make it too hard on myself the first time around so I just kept it basic. I planted swiss chard, arugula, spinach, bibb lettuce, mustard greens, and carrots. Let me tell you though, this was no easy feat. I do not live in the rolling hills of New Zealand or England but, rather, the hot and dry High Desert of Southern California. The ground was so hard it felt as though I was shoveling ancient bedrock as I turned it over. I went to bed that night with little muscles twitching all over my body. But it was all worth it! My first little sprouts have poked their tiny heads out and they look beautiful! I know its still early yet but I hope to be eating an awesome home grown salad in a couple months =)

Here’s my little garden behind the chicken wire I put up in an attempt to keep the dogs out. You can see the angel perched on the left corner that my mom bought for me. It guards against pests ;)

The first arugula!

The first spinach!

The angel.

The coffee grounds I sprinkle on the garden before watering for that extra nitrogen boost. I heard it was good for it. Hope so! Haha

Anyone have any tips for gardening in really hot, dry climates???

Autumn HuffineJune 14, 2010 - 10:09 pm

Yes, anytime! Let me talk to my dad, I wish I could say that I garden…but I have not for a very long time.

SaraJune 4, 2010 - 5:39 pm

Wow that’s awesome! You are way more ambitious than I, I just have swiss chard, merlot lettuce, and spinach. And the spinach is quite sickly. Good luck with your garden!

DeAnn PressleyJune 2, 2010 - 4:37 pm

If it gets too hot I sometimes used a rain umbrella over my plants :) Your Grandpa Blake is a great gardener as was his Grandpa Ratcliff (your great grandma Leone’s father) so gardening is defintely in your blood!

adminJune 1, 2010 - 11:32 pm

Autumn, I would love to! Can I come over and have a garden tour sometime??

Autumn HuffineJune 1, 2010 - 10:01 pm

You should talk with my dad, he’s the master. We a huge garden in our backyard. Actually, our whole backyard is a garden. If you’d like to talk with him let me know.

JulieJune 1, 2010 - 4:43 pm

can’t wait for all of the lettuce to grow and make a big salad out of it and, of course, green smoothies!

Nissi’s Bowling Birthday!

Yesterday was the eleventh birthday of a very lovely girl named Nissi. She is Tim’s little sister and is such a sweet young lady. She is usually either singing along to her karaoke machine or wrangling her two nephews, Mikkel and Isaiah, like a seasoned pro. I think she could be a dancer or a Broadway actress or a pop star. We’ll see what happens though ;)

She decided that she wanted to go bowling for her birthday so we all went to Oasis Lanes in Apple Valley and played a couple of games. Nissi’s big sister, Kristy, dominated with strikes left and right. It was amazing. And Tim’s mom. Well. I have never witnessed a smoother bowler in all my days. The ball seems to float like a hover craft down the lane. Turns out she was on her high school’s team back in the day. Tim is a natural at everything he does. Its disgusting ;) And everyone else was special in their own ways. Ha. Including myself.

Tim’s silly face.

My silly face.

Nissi’s birthday face.

Nissi’s gutter ball strike face.

Nissi’s pretty face.

Afterwards we all decided that we want to go bowling once a week. This cracks me up looking back on it. We must have been on that infamous “bowler’s high.” It was fun though. And I almost broke 100! ;)

I want to go to Apple Valley, looks like fun! Great shots, you look uber pretty in your silly face picture.

Jenna, Max, and Sunitha: Graduating!

It is no surprise to me that my sister is graduating from UCLA with her degree in Political Science in just a couple of weeks. She has always been such a hard worker and it has paid off in big ways. She was even ASB President in high school! Then, senior year, Jenna’s good friend Sunitha took the office and Jenna was her Vice President. Sunitha is the daughter of two doctor’s so she had quite the example growing up of what being highly motivated looked like. Sunitha is a Biology major who plans on following in her father’s footsteps on the business side of things. She’ll be taking over the world in no time ;) On that note, my sister already landed a sweet job working at Deca digital entertainment for women. It is right on the beach in Santa Monica which I know must be tough ;) Santa Monica just so happens to be the place where our third graduate, Max, grew up. Max, an Environmental Science major, and Jenna met in Spain last summer while doing UCLA’s study abroad program. There is a hilarious story that goes along with when they first met. Jenna and Sunitha were keeping a travel journal of sorts chronicling their adventures and all of the cute boys they encountered. Max and his friend found this little black journal and decided to write a full commentary in it on almost every page. Things like “OMG! he was so hot!” and such. Jenna and Sunitha found out only after the trip was over. Too funny. Especially knowing that Max had a big crush on Jenna. That all seems to have worked itself out though seeing as they’ve been together for almost a year now =)

Interesting facts about Jenna:

1) She has so many skills its crazy. She is the type of girl other girls want to be like.
2) She has an impeccable fashion sense, loves awesome music, and can talk politics with the best of them.
3) She is a great sister and friend and quite the poker shark.

Interesting facts about Max:

1) He loves RAW vegan food like pistachio cheese sauce ;)
2) He has lots of red hair and a favorite pair of sunglasses that he wears all the time
3) He is a truly nice guy with a funny sense of humor and a die hard Lakers fan

Interesting facts about Sunitha:

1) She just ran her first marathon! (probably in heals)
2) She is one of the sweetest girls I know
3) She has more motivation in her little pinkie than most people have in a lifetime

We decided to do graduation photos around the UCLA campus and then went down to the beach in Santa Monica. It was such a blast. Enjoy!
